Spalted Wood What is "Spalted" wood? By definition, spalting is a by product of the early stages of the rotting process that is carried out by a vast array of stain, mold and decay fugi, that are found naturally on the floor of a forest. The result is unusal colorations and patterns that only mother nature can produce. Spalted wood is greatly valued for its natural decorative beauty by wood turners and craftsman, while regarded as poor wood by lumberman and sawmillers for its degradation (one person's junk another person's treasure). The process of spalting is stopped once the wood has been cut and kiln dried. |
